Paper Cranes is Julie James’ debut novel, a romance centered around Cassie, a recently widowed single mother. The book follows her journey of grief, healing, friendship, and new relationship with Matt, the other main character.
I designed the cover for Paper Cranes as well as the interior and the ebook.
Origami, specifically cranes, plays a great role in the novel and often is used for tender teaching moments with the children. The author and I decided to pursue this route and make the origami cranes the focus of the cover.
The sketch-like style of the cranes reflects the imperfect and messy life that Cassie has found herself in - her family has been consumed by grieving the loss of her husband, and the author does not shy away from showing the difficult side of grief and longing.
This book included many unique elements such as handwritten letters from both main characters, emails, text messages, and thoughts, all of which required custom formatting with new font treatments meant to make them stand out and to make it obvious what the content is even before reading it.
